Commissioning a CNC machine is a key step in ensuring safe, reliable and precise operation. Whether it is a new, used or relocated AXA machine, professional commissioning ensures that the machine is correctly integrated into the production process and helps reduce the risk of later errors or downtime.

AXA machining centers are powerful and precise machines. For this reason, it is important that all mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and control systems are properly checked and aligned during commissioning. What does it include?

Professional commissioning follows a structured procedure. It includes machine inspection, checking of connections, CNC control setup, function testing and, if required, basic geometric inspection.

1. Machine inspection and preparation

  • The first step is to check the basic condition of the machine after installation. This includes the mechanical condition of the guideways, axes, spindle, guards, doors and other key assemblies. Electrical connection, pneumatics, hydraulics, lubrication system, cooling system and basic safety functions are also checked.
  • Special attention is given to emergency stop buttons, safety doors, limit switches and the machine’s safety logic.

2. Initialization and configuration

  • After the initial inspection, the CNC control is started. Depending on the machine configuration, AXA machines may be equipped with different CNC controls, such as HEIDENHAIN or Siemens.
  • In this phase, system parameters, axis movement directions, reference points, software and hardware travel limits, speeds and acceleration settings are checked.
  • If required, the tool table, corrections, compensations, zero points and other technological data are also reviewed. These settings are essential for correct and reliable machine operation.

3. Functional testing

  • Functional testing confirms that all main machine functions work correctly and in coordination with each other. The axes are tested in manual mode, together with JOG functions, spindle operation, tool change, coolant system, lubrication, extraction, M-codes, I/O signals and connections to external systems.
  • On more complex AXA machines, additional axes, rotary tables, tool magazines, clamping systems and other optional functions are also checked.

4. Geometrical check (optional)

  • After transport, relocation or a longer period of inactivity, it is recommended to check the machine geometry. If required, this can include inspection of positioning accuracy, axis squareness, repeatability, ballbar measurement or laser measurement.
  • Once the basic functions have been checked, a test machining operation is carried out. This verifies machine operation under real conditions, including spindle load, tool change, coolant operation, chip removal and machining quality.

5. Operator training

  • An important part of successful commissioning is basic operator training. Operators are introduced to the main functions of the control, axis referencing, zero point setting, tool table use, program start-up, safety procedures and basic fault diagnostics.
  • This helps reduce the risk of incorrect machine use and enables a faster transition to regular production.
