COMPANY HISTORY

The company’s origins date back to 1889, when Wilhelm Heidenhain founded a metal etching business in Berlin, producing stencils, signs, divisions, and scales. The company was destroyed during World War II. However, in 1948, Wilhelm’s son founded a new company—DR. JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN—in Traunreut. The company’s first products were divisions and scales for cash-register-enabled scales. Soon afterward, the product line was expanded to include optical position measuring systems for machine tools. In the early 1960s, the company transitioned to photoelectrically scanned linear and angle encoders. This development made it possible to automate a wide range of machines and systems in the manufacturing industry.

Since the mid-1970s, HEIDENHAIN has increasingly established itself as a producer of control and drive technology for machine tools. The company continuously invests heavily in research and development, enabling it to remain one of the leading companies in this field.
